Ella Baker Center and Apollo Alliance Publish Making Green Work

Apollo Alliance - Making Green Work: Best Practices in Green-Collar Job Training ... looks at best practices in terms of how to create a program that builds on local priorities, business conditions and economic strengths unique to its city or region, and what types of organizations should be included as partners in the training program, such as community colleges, green businesses, labor unions and existing job training programs. It also covers the nuts and bolts of program structure, from recruitment to curriculum to wrap-around support services to measures of success and evaluation.

A large section of the guidebook is also devoted to case studies of green-collar job training programs in California. Each case study includes information on the program’s approach, funding sources, partners and curriculum. The case studies also present challenges and lessons learned from each program, such as one program’s experience that it must continuously be prepared to alter its curriculum to respond to changes in the renewable energy industry and another program’s experience that it must put significant effort toward building relationships with employers in order to ensure that trained students are able to be placed in stable jobs.
Anyone who is interested in creating a green-collar job training program—or improving an existing program—should spend some time perusing this valuable new resource. Making Green Work can be downloaded from the Ella Baker Center for Human rights website.
