Rockefeller, Waxman Crafting Bill To Overhaul Auto Safety Laws
Detroit News (4/28, Shepardson) reports that Senate Commerce Chairman Jay Rockefeller and House Energy and Commerce Chairman Henry Waxman, "in the wake of [Toyota's] massive recalls," are introducing "auto safety legislation that will require all automakers to install anti-runaway technology-brake override systems, stop-start technology and event data recorders." The bill may also increase maximum fines for "delaying auto safety recalls" and mandate "more staffing for NHTSA and find ways to give NHTSA more authority to order recalls faster." The News notes that NHTSA Administrator Strickland "endorsed hiking maximum fines to more than $100 million in a recent Detroit News interview." Via NAM
