Manufacturer Prototype Productions thrives on open collaboration process

Washington Business Journal (Musgrave) - To hear Joe Travez tell it, there’s no mystery behind the growth of Prototype Productions Inc. from a Rockville garage startup in 1991 to a business that today counts NASA among its clients.
“Having a collaborative workplace is the secret to our success,” says Travez, a native of Ecuador and the company’s CEO, during a tour of PPI’s Ashburn facility. “Designing and manufacturing, all under one roof. And did you notice that we don’t have any doors? This way the engineers and the manufacturers can better work together — a no-collar environment.”

The lingering effects of the U.S. economic downturn have not soured him on the prospects for the future. “That American entrepreneurial spirit, that can-do attitude, is what gets companies like ours through the hard times,” Travez says. “You go through a crisis, and you get stronger.” PPI intends to do just that, with plans to add as many as 150 employees in the year ahead.

  1. I'm not sure how much the recession had affect the Product Development Outsource Companies. The prototype outsourcing industry seems to be thriving so I can make a wild guess that it was either unharmed, or there are rapid prototype manufacturers out there that are experts on fighting back.
